Our second day in Athens was a Sunday, so we decided to find the church in Athens and attend our usual meetings. It was an amazing experience listening to the meetings in Greek, translated to English, and to see the small group of dedicated Saints living and serving in Athens.
We unfortunately had to rush off to head up the street to Syntagma Square to catch the changing of the guards... though, I must say, this really was a great thing to see! Much more exciting than the changing of the guard at Buckingham Palace and the Evzone Guard uniforms are even cooler than the Swiss Guard at the Vatican!
These are some tall and stern faced dudes!
And their uniforms are very specially made, with pleats representing each year of Turkish occupation.
After stopping for a bite to eat, we jumped on one of the tourist buses to take a break from walking and see what other sights Athens had to offer.
On the bus, we met another couple who raved about how great the New Acropolis Museum is... we jumped off and went in to take a look. We would definitely recommend anyone going to Athens takes the time to explore this amazing museum, and if possible, visiting before going up to see the ruins on the Acropolis. It is built over a dig site and has a perspex floor so you can look at the ruins beneath your feet, and has amazing artifacts and reconstructions.
These cool panels and artifacts are all over Athens. When Athens was preparing to host the Olympic Games, they decided to upgrate their metro system, and in digging their way around, uncovered more and more sites of archeological significance... so as you go through the underground tunnels, walk above ground over perspex panelling, you are always finding new things to look at!
We ate more, shopped more and wandered more.
Mmm. Baklava and Galacticoburiko...
We could easily have spent another few days in Athens... but then, we would've had less time in Santorini... and trust me, no one wants to spend less time in Santorini...
